092 – What is the root cause of procrastination?
Let’s face it, we know what we need to do, but we don’t do it. The reason why we stall is deeply rooted in how we feel about ourselves.
It took me years to realize that procrastination is a symptom, not the root cause. The reality is that we live in an illusion, and society as a whole wants to keep us that way. We are attracted by the bright shiny object syndrome and instant gratification.
We seek validation and fulfillment from the external world to make us feel whole. You may wonder, what does this have to do with procrastination? Well, everything! It takes willpower to get started and a clear vision. The challenge is that society suppresses our ability to think for ourselves. In the first twenty years of our lives, we are more focused on meeting others’ expectations, losing our sense of initiative in pursuing what we truly want. We play it safe and imitate others, engaging in activities that are not aligned with our talents and values.
Over time, we lose touch with our true selves, resulting in a lack of inner clarity. This state of mind leads to a spiral of unfocused thoughts and self-doubts. Eventually, we struggle to achieve desired results and become stuck. We lose enthusiasm for the tasks we once started, and procrastination sets in.
