092 – What is the root cause of procrastination?
Let’s face it, we know what we need to do, but we don’t do it. The reason as to why we stall is deeply rooted in how we feel about ourselves.
It took me years to realize that procrastination is a symptom, not the root cause. The reality is that we live in an illusion, and society as a whole wants to keep us that way. We get attracted by the bright shiny object syndrome and instant gratification. We seek from the outer world to make us feel whole. You may say, what does has anything to do with procrastination. Well, everything! It takes willpower to get started and clarity of vision. The challenge is that society suppresses our ability to think for ourselves. For the first twenty years of our lives, we are more preoccupied with doing what others expect of us that we no longer have a sense of initiative in doing what we are meant to do. So we play safe and copy others. We do things that are not aligned with our talents and values.
After a while, we no longer know who we are, so we lack inner clarity. This state of mind takes us into a spiral of lack of focus to self-doubts. In the end, we lack results, and we get stuck. We no longer get excited about doing what we started, and we start procrastinating.
